Then, in 2004 the impossible happened: our 23-year-old daughter Rachel intervened in a fight protecting a perfect stranger, and was fatally shot.

After Racheal’s death in 2004 I received a gift of a memorial tree planted at the JFK Memorial Forest in Jerusalem. After Janet’s estate was settled, I flew to Jerusalem in 2018. It was a powerful monument designed as a tall tree cut down in mid-life.

She was awarded the Governor General’s Medal of Bravery (2007), had a ceremonial circle of trees planted in her memory at the JFK Memorial Forest in Jerusalem in 2004, was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Vancouver Police, and lauded in a Globe & Mail editorial.
